Couple Bills Medicare and Medicaid for Services Not-Rendered

A Lakeland, FL couple was sentenced to several years in prison for defrauding Medicare and Medicaid of almost $320,000 between April 2006 and June 2009. The couple operated two companies, Lakeland Therapy Providers Inc. and Optimum Therapy Inc., which they used to bill Medicare and Medicaid for therapy services that were never rendered. The couple pleaded guilty in 2010, and they were sentenced in early 2011.

U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore also entered a forfeiture judgment against the couple for almost $320,000 and ordered each defendant to pay restitution of $278,440 to Medicare and $40,975 to Medicaid.
